Massachusetts health plan startup to double Maine workforce

A Massachusetts-based health plan provider plans to double its workforce at its Maine service center.

Devoted Health, which launched in October 2018 and is headquartered in Waltham, Mass., opened a service center in New Gloucester in October 2019.

The service center, which is on the Pineland Farms campus, now has nearly 40 staffers and that number could double by year’s end, the company said.

It plans to hire member-service employees. Its Maine employees have been working remotely since mid-March and the new employees will also work remotely during the pandemic.

“Not only will this expansion result in more good paying jobs, but it is a positive recognition that our dedicated, hardworking people are a smart and worthwhile investment,” Gov. Janet Mills said in the release.

The company offers Medicare Advantage plans in Texas and Florida. The New Gloucester expansion result from plans to expand offerings to several new states in 2021,

Forbes named it one of America’s 2020 Best Startup Employers.

The company has prior connections in Maine. Its co-founders, brothers Todd Park and Ed Park, were also co-founders of healthcare information technology company AthenaHealth, which established operations in Belfast in 2008. Larry Henry, Devoted’s head of health plan operations, is the former chief operating officer of Martin's Point Health Care in Portland.

The company calls itself a “payvidor” that integrates being both a payor and provider of health care services. The company partners with doctors and hospitals and uses guides and tech-enabled care services in the home that are designed to help keep plan members healthy.

With 557 employees in five states (Maine, Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, Ohio and Arizona), Devoted Health plans to hire 300 employees across all locations this year.

“Devoted Health is one of America’s most exciting startup companies,” said Peter DelGreco, president and CEO of Maine & Co., a private nonprofit organization that helps companies with their growth and expansion plans in Maine.
