ME gets $10.5M to fund homeless programs

Maine will get over $10.5 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support 42 homeless housing-service programs around the state.

According to a press release, the funding comes through HUD's Continuum of Care grant that aims to support programs offering permanent and transitional housing as well as job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care.

HUD reported that estimates of how many people were homeless on a single night in January 2012 were largely unchanged from the previous year in national totals. In Maine, there was a 2% reported overall drop in homelessness in 2012 compared with 2011.
