MECA mulls partnership with documentary school

After announcing that it would close doors this fall, the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland may be rescued through a possible partnership with the Maine College of Art.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Kimberly Curry, the leader of Salt’s board of directors, said on Monday the group is discussing a partnership with MECA. Raffi Der Simonian, MECA’s marketing director, told the newspaper that Salt would likely operate as an entity within MECA.

Salt’s executive director had announced last month that the documentary school would close this fall because of flat enrollment and a loss of critical funding sources. But a group of supporters and Salt’s board has since stepped up in an effort to save the organization.
