Mercy, EMHS sign merger proposal

An agreement signed Monday between Portland's Mercy Health System of Maine and Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems outlines how the Portland hospital could join the larger network.

After signing Monday's agreement, officials from both health care systems will seek the necessary state and federal approval, the Portland Press Herald reported.

Additionally, Catholic-based Mercy hospital will require a go-ahead from the Vatican before a merger can take place.

The agreement signed Monday eyes a merger six to nine months from now, though officials estimate a full merger could take up to two years.

In early December, Mercy announced its plan to merge with EMHS after a deal to join the Massachusetts-based Steward Health Care System fell apart.
