Migis Hotel Group, the Westbrook-based owner of Black Point Inn and six other Maine hospitality properties, has established a program to address food insecurity in the state's public schools.

Migis has connected with United Way of Southern Maine on a “Better Together" campaign.

Migis presented updates on the initiative at its annual company retreat at Migis Lodge in South Casco. It anchored the retreat as the group reflected on support for their work communities as colleagues and how the company as a whole supports the communities in which it operates.

Aware of the reality of food insecurity through its efforts with Full Plates Full Potential, Preble Street Resource Center, Maine Needs, and AIO Food Pantry, Migis said it leveraged its individual and collective skills sets, company culture and industry relations to assemble 1,000 nutrition kits.

Bob Luce of Carrabassett Coffee, a long-time vendor, pledged support to partner with Migis’ efforts. Luce’s daughter teaches in an elementary school in Kingfield and has shared with him the daily realities of food insecurity she witnesses in her classroom. During the retreat, over 60 supervisors from Migis’s hotel properties assembled the kits, each containing nutritious non-perishable food items.

The kits were distributed to public schools in Westbrook and Kingfield.

Migis also unveiled the launch of paid time off program so employees could volunteer.

Jesse Henry, Migis’ managing partner, announced the new initiative at the retreat.

“This initiative highlights one of our key company values, as we are genuinely committed to being responsible members of our communities and the environment,” said Henry.
