Military personnel begin BNAS departure

The first of five squadrons stationed at the Brunswick Naval Air Station departed last Friday, marking the beginning of the navy base's shutdown.

The first planes from Patrol Squadron 8 left Brunswick for a six-month deployment in the Middle East, with the rest of the squadron's 300 personnel -- about 15% of the base's active military personnel -- scheduled to leave this week, according to The Times Record in Brunswick. The planes will land at their new headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla., when they return from their overseas tour.

Three more squadrons are scheduled to leave the base next summer, and the last will leave in December 2009, according to the paper.
