Gov. Janet Mills signed legislation today promoting pay equality in Maine — 10 days after lawmakers approved the bill on National Equal Pay Day.

LD 278, “An Act Regarding Pay Equality,” discourages employers from basing wages on an employee’s salary history, characterizing inquiries about an individual’s compensation history as unlawful discrimination.

The bill moved ahead April 3 with a Senate vote of 22-11, and a House vote of 86-54, overriding opposition voiced by groups including the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Retail Association of Maine and Hospitality Maine.

Mills is scheduled to sign the bill at an early afternoon ceremony in Augusta, where she will deliver marks, along with the bill’s sponsor, state Sen. Cathy Breen, D-Falmouth.

The governor has had a busy first few months in office and signed 13 bills into law on Thursday alone covering a wide range of policy areas  — from exempting Head Start school buses from snow tire restrictions (LD 350) to strengthening qualifications for county sheriffs (LD 456).
