Jared Cash will be the new president and CEO of the Mitchell Institute, effective Jan. 1.

On Jan. 1, Cash will replace Meg Baxter, who announced her plans to retire earlier this year after leading the Mitchell Institute for 10 years.

Cash currently serves as vice president for enrollment and marketing at the University of Southern Maine.

His appointment follows a national search process that began earlier this year that was led by Greenwich Harbor Partners.

“We are very pleased to welcome Jared as the new leader of the Mitchell Institute,” said Mitchell, founder and honorary chair of the institute's board. “His deep commitment to Maine and its students, extensive knowledge of the education landscape, and strong belief in our mission makes him the right person to continue the success of the organization in supporting scholars and improving communities.”

Prior to his current position at USM, Cash was vice president for enrollment and external relations at the University of Maine at Farmington. He also previously held positions at Bates College, where he received his undergraduate degree. He received his master's in education from Northeastern University in Boston.

He resides in Norway, with his wife Mallory Brooke and his two children.

Mitchell, an attorney who was born in Waterville, represented Maine from 1980-95 as a U.S. senator, and was the Senate majority leader for six years. Since retiring from Congress, he has served as an international diplomat under two presidents, and for his role in the Northern Ireland peace process was nominated for the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize.

In addition to his leadership of the Mitchell Institute, he also has been active in business, chairing the Walt Disney Co. from 2004-07 and later the international law firm DLA Piper.

“Sen. Mitchell’s vision to lift aspirations of Maine students and communities resonates with me as a first generation college student and someone who has devoted his career to education and student success,” Cash said.

The organization awards $1.4 million in college scholarship funds every year to students from public high schools in every community in Maine. According to the institute, Mitchell Scholars graduate at a rate 25% higher than the national average and are more likely than their peers to stay in Maine or return to the state after college.
