Multi-state email scam targets employers

State officials are warning of a scam that aims to lure employers into providing confidential information about their employees.

Businesses in at least 10 states have received emails from an address with the suffix "@detma.org" as a part of this scam, according to the Maine Department of Labor.

In a press release, the department provided a sample of such an email, which tells a New York business owner that a former employee has filed for unemployment assistance and that they are required to file certain information about that former employee.

Labor Commissioner Jeanne Paquette is warning business owners about emails from the web domain "detma.org" and said in a press release that Maine's Bureau of Unemployment Compensation does not send out unsolicited emails requesting confidential information.

Paquette asked that business people who think they might have been targeted as a part of this scam should contact the bureau at 621-5100.
