The Bath Housing Authority Development Corporation is wrapping construction on its first new housing project in 40 years with an 18-unit affordable apartment building that will lease to households whose income does not exceed 80% of the area mean income.
Targeting that middle income level will provide more diverse housing options in the city, according to Debora Keller, the corporation's executive director, housing which is needed to allow local employers to attract workers who want to live in Bath.
“As our first new construction, multi-family housing project since 1984, 520 Centre St. is a proud moment in Bath Housing’s history, and an example of how we are advancing forward-thinking housing solutions so that all who want to call Sagadahoc County home can live, work and thrive together,” said Keller.
The four-story building will add to the nonprofit’s existing portfolio of 175 units. In addition to the apartments on the upper floors, the ground floor will house administrative offices for the housing authority.
The new complex was designed by Portland-based Ryan Senatore Architects and built by Ouellet Construction, which is based in Brunswick. Sustainability features include high performance insulation, rooftop solar system offsets and improved air quality systems.
Keller said the 22,456-square-foot complex is convenient to the Congress Street walking path, downtown businesses, schools, shopping and the public bus system which serves commuters to Bath Iron works. A BIW shuttle also has a stop nearby.
The two-bedroom apartments will be move-in ready in July and applications are being accepted now. Rents are expected to be in the range of $1,850 per month and will include all utilities.
