New border rules begin today

New border rules go into effect today for adults crossing by land into the United States from Canada or Mexico, and some Maine businesses that benefit from Canadian shoppers worry those rules will cause a drop-off in sales.

Beginning today, adults crossing into the United States by land must present documentation proving their citizenship, beyond just showing their drivers licenses or declaring their nationality. The fear is that the new requirements could cause delays and difficulties, discouraging people from making the trip, the Associated Press reported. Earlier this week, 19 U.S. senators wrote a letter to the Department of Homeland Security warning that commerce could be hurt if officials enforced the security standards, which were first proposed three years ago.

In the next few days or weeks, customs officials will allow a grace period in which they educate travelers that they must carry their passports or birth certificates with them to cross the border.
