New fuel plant pitched in Brewer

A new corporation is looking to build a plant in Brewer that would be the first to produce liquid methane fuel in Maine.

Maine Liquid Methane Fuels LLC has signed an option agreement with the city for 10 acres in Brewer's new business district off Wiswell Road to build a liquid methane fuel plant, according to a press release from the company and the Bangor Daily News. The $50 million plant will purify and liquefy natural gas from the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline and truck it to customers, initially large commercial users like paper mills, in interior regions of the state. The company expects to hire 12-20 full-time workers for the project, and anticipates an additional 6-10 related transport jobs will be created as well, according to the release. The company is submitting plans for the plant today and will present the project to the planning board on Feb. 1.

Maine Liquid Methane Fuels LLC is owned by an investor group and managed by Portsmouth, N.H.-based CHI Engineering Services Inc., which has developed a similar facility in California, according to the company's website. Liquid methane fuel produces fewer emissions than fossil fuels and is cheaper to deliver than refined petroleum fuel, according to the company. If approved, the plant would open in spring or summer of 2011, according to the Daily News.
