New hires

The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry hired Nancy McBrady as director of the bureau of agriculture, food and rural resources and Emily Horton as director of policy and community engagement. McBrady was previously executive director of the Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine while Horton worked as the agriculture and natural resource representative for U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree.

TOCmedia in Winslow hired Elizabeth Kalmus as copy writer and James Gilmore as social media specialist.

Bar Harbor Bank & Trust hired Jaime Frederes as senior vice president and director of residential lending. Most recently Frederes was vice president, area lending manger for Bank of America in Southern/Central Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Cathance River Education Alliance in Topsham hired Pat Bobker as development coordinator. Bobker has 20 years of experience in environmental journalism and nonprofit leadership.

Machias Savings Bank hired Christine Bishop as vice president, cash management solution manager.

People’s United Bank in Portland hired Katie Grenier as vice president, business banking relationship manager.

Golden Pond Wealth Management in Waterville hired Katie Brann. Brann was previously with Stone Coast Fund Services in Portland.

Down East Credit Union in Baileyville hired Matthew Fleming as CFO. Fleming was previously director of accounting and finance at ProInfoNet and Health Connect Networks.

Portland Ovations, a nonprofit performing arts organization in Portland, hired Atiim Boykin as co-director of engagement, community programs and Sarah Coleman as co-director of engagement, school programs. Boykin has 15 years of experience as a musician, songwriter, band-leader, spoken word poet, community organizer, activist and family therapist while Coleman was most recently chair of the visual and performing arts department and director of drama at Hebron Academy.

Bangor Savings Bank hired Kaleigh Deering as a vice president and mortgage loan officer at its Scarborough branch. Deering, who has 14 years of experience in the financial industry, was most recently mortgage loan officer at Norway Savings Bank.

Community Care Partnership of Maine in Bangor hired Kim Alexander as director of quality and Kate Chambers as executive assistant and project coordinator. Alexander has 18 years of experience as a registered nurse and most recently served as vice president of physician services at Mayo Regional Hospital while Chambers was a senior executive assistant at Emera Maine.

CourseStorm, a tech startup in Orono, hired Brady Charron as software engineer, Monique Bouchard as content marketing writer, Ashleigh Briggs as customer success lead and Adam Shortsleeves as customer success specialist.

Ocean’s Edge Realty in Bucksport hired Emily Wascholl as sales agent.

The city of Portland hired Heather Brown as assistant city manager. Brown was previously director of management and strategic initiatives and acting deputy chief of staff for the Office of the Commissioner for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Maryland.

Care & Comfort, a behavioral health, home health and veterans services agency in Waterville, hired Michelle Dixon as director of nursing.

RE/MAX Shoreline in Portland hired Rachel Moyse as an associate broker.

Promotions

Ocean’s Edge Realty in Bucksport promoted Kim LaPlant to sales agent. LaPlant was previously administrative assistant.

Skowhegan Savings Bank promoted David Cyr to president. Cyr, who was previously executive vice president and has been with the bank since 2005, will also assume the role of CEO upon the retirement of John Witherspoon, president and CEO, at the end of the year.

Geiger, a promotional products distributor in Lewiston, promoted Jo-an Lantz to CEO.

University of Maine System in Augusta announced that Rebecca Wyke will continue to lead the University of Maine at Augusta as president. In June 2017, Wyke was appointed to a fixed, three-year term.

The Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth promoted Hannah Whalen to director of philanthropy and donor services. Whalen was previously a senior foundation officer.

Appointments

Gov. Janet Mills reappointed Jason Oney, Morten Arntzen and Arthur Watson Jr. to the Maine Maritime Academy board of trustees and nominated Mary Shea as student trustee. Oney is president and CEO of Strategic Maintenance Solutions Inc., Arntzen is executive chairman of Team Tankers International and senior shipping industry advisory for Macquarie Bank, Watson works at Watson Enterprises Inc. while Shea is a senior at the academy.

RE/MAX Shoreline in Portland said Rachel Reed, co-owner, vice president and COO, was voted as a new member of the Board of Directors of the Falmouth/Cumberland Community Chamber of Commerce.

At its annual meeting, Bath Savings Institution elected Matthew Newman, David Herring and Rebecca Shepherd as new corporators and elected Kevin Burns, Erik Hayward, Glenn Hutchinson, Esther Pappas, William Racine, Sandra Morrell Rooney and John Voorhees as trustees.

Skowhegan Savings elected Benjamin Marcus to its board of directors. Marcus is managing director of Drummond Woodsum, a law firm in Portland. The bank also elected five new corporators: Brian Bernatchez, managing director and financial advisor of Golden Pond Wealth Management; Lisa Landry, human resources director of Redington Fairview General Hospital; Jacques Santucci, president and managing partner of Opus Ventures and Consulting Group; Karl Strand, president and general manager of Sugarloaf; and Brad Stokes, owner of Ocuossoc Grocery and manager of Morton Furbish Insurance.

Achievements

Maine Tourism Association in Hallowell announced that Ed Palmer and Tom Palmer are this year’s inductees into its Hall of Fame. Ed Palmer is general manager of the Portland Marriott Sable Oaks while Tom Palmer is regional sales manager and partner for Lafayette Hotels.

Sophia Rosendo of Tranzon Auction Properties in Portland completed her training at the Certified Auctioneers Institute, a program developed by the National Auctioneers Association.

Community Health Options in Lewiston received the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Honors from the American Psychological Association. The award is the organization’s highest national workplace recognition and is given for outstanding efforts to foster employee health and well-being while enhancing organizational performance. Portland Symphony Orchestra was also recognized.

Skowhegan Savings named Shelly Lowell its “President’s Award” winner for outstanding performance and her commitment to her customers. Lowell, a community banker in the Franklin County region, has 25 years of experience in retail and commercial banking assisting customers with their mortgage and business financing needs.

Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and Bangor High School were recognized with a National Athletic Trainers’ Association “Safe Sports School Award.” The award champions safety and identifies secondary schools that provide a safe setting for student athletes and emphasizes the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention and treatment.

Northern Light Mercy Hospital in Portland was named to Newsweek’s “Best Hospitals” list based on patient satisfaction, surveys of health care professionals and safety and quality measures.

Sodexo, a provider of sustainable, integrated facilities management and food service operations, was recognized with a “Partnership and Innovation” award by the University of Southern Maine for its contributions in fighting hunger and supporting the Maine economy at the 2019 PUSH (Presidents United to Solve Hunger) conference.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in Augusta honored longtime Maine guide Bonnie Holding with the “Wiggie Robinson Legendary Maine Guide Award.” Holding, a Master Maine Guide for 30 years, is the first female recipient of the award.

Greenway Equipment Sales in Bangor and Ellsworth is celebrating 25 years as a John Deere dealer.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors and its Partner America Program selected the city of Portland to receive the “2019 Partner America Small Business Friendly Community Award” for demonstrating its commitment and support of small business by creating a business friendly environment for businesses to grow and prosper.

F.L.Putnam Investment Management Co. in Portland said Robertson Breed, senior vice president and portfolio manager, was named to the Barron’s list of “America’s Top 1,200 Financial Advisors.”

John Johnson, vice president of technology at Elmet Technologies in Lewiston, was named a recipient of American Powder Metallurgy Institute International’s “2019 Fellow Award,” honoring members for their contributions to the goals, purpose and mission of the organization.

Caitlin McDonough MacKenzie, Kate Ruskin and Stephanie Spera were awarded fellowships to conduct research in the Acadia National Park as part of Second Century Stewardship, an initiative of the National Park Service and Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park. Donough MacKenzie is a David H. Smith Conservation Research Postdoctoral Fellow, Climate Change Institute, University of Maine; Ruskin a lecturer and undergraduate director, Ecology and Environmental Sciences Program, University of Maine; and Spera an assistant professor of geography, University of Richmond.

Geiger, a promotional products distributor in Lewiston, presented its quarterly “President’s Awards” to Michael French, Patti Gallant, Bryon Newcomb and Louise Michaud.

Maxwell Burtis and his company, Ferda Farms LLC, took home both the first place prize of $5,000 and the $10,000 innovation prize at the UMaine Business Challenge. Isabel Adler and Lily Hogan, from Colby College, rounded out the awards taking home the second place prize of $1,000 with their outdoor company Ruggette.

Channel 8 WMTW in Portland was awarded a “2019 Corporate Partner Award” from the American Red Cross Maine Chapter.

Members of the Maine Association of Mortgage Professionals recently traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with members of congress to advocate for the interest of both mortgage professionals and consumers in the state of Maine. The association travel party included Executive Director Joshua Wolfe, President Tiffany Dembowski, Vice President Rhonda Small and Director Hal Tippetts.
