New hires

Northern Light Mercy Hospital in Portland hired Samuel Michel as a general surgeon at Northern Light Mercy Surgery. Michel is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

WellSort, a startup in Portland, hired Elissa Pike English in a contract role to support the company’s WellSort 2.0 project launch. English s a project management and marketing specialist.

Atlantic Federal Credit Union in South Portland hired Nikki Wyman as a commercial relationship manager.

Penobscot General Contractors in Falmouth hired Bill Birney as vice president of industrial and manufacturing markets. Birney was previously vice president of energy and industrial at Allnorth Consultants.

Franklin Savings Bank in Farmington hired Holly Archer as vice president and mortgage loan officer in Ellsworth.

Norway Savings Bank hired Kyle Morrell as branch manager in South Portland.

Camden National Corp. appointed Marie McCarthy as vice-chair of its board of directors, effective immediately, and as chair of the board, effective upon the retirement of Lawrence Sterrs at the end of the year. McCarthy was COO at L.L.Bean before retiring in April.

Achievements

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins was awarded the American Network of Community Options and Resources Congressional Medicaid Champion Award and was honored by the Foundation to Eradicate Duchenne for her leadership in securing millions of dollars for medical research dedicated to Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

VIP Tires & Service in Auburn said it received the “2025 WishMaker Award” from Make-A-Wish Maine. In 2024, customers and employees of the company donated $330,000 to the charity.

The Maine Council on Aging in Brunswick announced its 2025 award recipients including Brenda Gallant, executive director of Maine’s Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, “2025 Lasting Legacy Award;” Rep. Kristen Cloutier of Lewiston, District 94, “2025 Legislator of the Year Award;” Claudette Ndayininahaze, executive director of In Her Presence, and Rebecca Spear, program director, geriatric medicine fellowship, Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency, “2025 Trailblazing Advocates;” Motivational Services Inc. in Augusta, “2025 Business Excellence Award;” and Leslie Hill, professor emeritus of politics, Bates College, “2025 Douglas O. Wilson Rising Tide Leadership Award.”

Ten hospitals in Maine were among the 4,800 nationwide that participate in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines initiative to improve outcomes for Americans who experience heart disease or stroke. Recognized hospitals include Bridgton Hospital, Central Maine Medical Center, Houlton Regional Hospital, MaineHealth Waldo Hospital, Maine Medical Center, MaineGeneral Medical Center - Alfond Center for Health, Mid Coast Hospital, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, Pen Bay Medical Center and Rumford Hospital.

Berman & Simmons, a law firm in Lewiston, announced that eight of its lawyers were recognized by Best Lawyers in America 2026. Susan Faunce was named “Lawyer of the Year,” Faunce and four co-workers were recognized in the “Best Lawyers” category and three others were identified in the “Ones to Watch” category.

Efficiency Maine in Augusta recognized the town of Winthrop with its “Philip C. The organization also recognized 12 companies in the category of “Residential Programs” in 2025; 12 companies in the category of “Commercial Programs” in 2025; and three companies in the category of “Electric Vehicle Program” in 2025.

Knickerbocker Group, a design-build firm in Portland, said that Julien Jalbert was selected as one of New England Home’s “5 Under 40” honorees for 2025. Jalbert is design studio leader at the firm.

The Alfond Youth & Community Center in Waterville said that Craig Sargent, head instructor of its Club Naha Karate-Do USA, was awarded the “Greatest of All Time Martial Arts Award” at the G.O.A.T. Martial Arts Awards Banquet.

Unity Environmental University in New Gloucester announced that Melik Peter Khoury, president and CEO, was selected to receive the “2025 Eileen Tosney Award for Career Service in Higher Education” from the American Association of University Administrators.
