Poll: Recovery two years away

Less than 2% of the state's population believes Maine is already out of the recession, according to a new poll from Pan Atlantic SMS Group.

The Portland-based firm polled 401 Maine voters between April 25 and May 4 for its 48th Omnibus Poll. Only 1.7% of respondents believed Maine has already emerged from the recession, and just 4.2% said the recession will end later this year. A little more than 18% said Maine will bounce back in 2012, while more than half the respondents, 59.1%, said Maine will come out of the recession after 2012. Also, 57% of Mainers said the state is headed in the wrong direction, while 29.4% said it was headed in the right direction, according to Pan Atlantic.

The poll also found that 74.5% of Mainers plan to drive somewhat or a lot less this summer because of high gas prices. The survey has a 4.9% margin of error.
