Three years after acquiring two acres on Allen Avenue in Portland, a funeral home has moved into its new site.
Conroy-Tully Walker Cremations, Funerals and Gatherings in Portland finished up construction of its new location at 300 Allen Ave. in the North Deering neighborhood and has sold its longstanding site at 172 State St.
“This building represents both our history and our future,” said Adam Walker, owner of Conroy-Tully Walker. “We’ve created a space that feels comfortable and uplifting — one that accommodates traditional services but also provides room for gatherings coupled with food and drink, celebrations, and community connections.”
The company bought the Allen Avenue property in 2022 to build a 9,899 square-foot funeral, cremation and memorial service center under one roof.
The $3.6 million project was a ground-up construction on nearly two acres. The project team included Benchmark Construction, Harriman Architecture and Design and Gorrill-Palmer Consulting Engineers.
Norway Savings Bank provided the financing.
“It features a stone fireplace, large windows that flood the space with light, large timber trusses and a spacious gathering hall for receptions and celebrations of life, a large multipurpose space with seating for approximately 150 people, two private arrangement offices and a state-of-the-art care center to embalm and prepare decedents,” Walker told Mainebiz.
Designed to be more of an event center, families can host services, receptions, or more casual gatherings under one roof.
The company was founded in 1959 at 15 Deering St. In 1960, the firm purchased the R.J. Duddy and Sons Funeral Home at 172 State St. and relocated there. In 1990, it opened a branch at 1024 Broadway in South Portland. Walker and his wife, Caitlin, bought the business in 2014.
The company listed its longstanding 172 State St. location for $2.09 million.
The State Street property is an 8,390-square-foot, three-story building, but the public areas were only 2,500 square feet.
The property sold at the end of August.
“We officially closed that location on Oct. 1, with a private prayer service with a local priest, friar Michael Seavey, our staff and former owners to honor its 65-year legacy," said Walker.
The new owner intends to convert it into a bed-and-breakfast, “which we are thrilled with as it will continue to serve the community and maintain the integrity of the building,” he added.
Operations were transitioned from State Street to Allen Avenue over the past few weeks. The company now serves clients families out of the new Portland location, in addition to its South Portland and Springvale facilities.
“Our goal was to ensure continuity of care for families with no disruption in service,” Walker noted.
The new location allows the company to grow its team, he said.
“We’ve recently added a director of operations, Brian Falvey, and multiple support staff to accommodate the increased space and services,” said Walker. “We anticipate additional hiring in 2026 as we expand our reception and event offerings.”
A dedication and open house is scheduled for Oct. 30, starting at 3 p.m. There will be live music and refreshments provided by Tally’s Kitchen, Bruno’s Restaurant and North Deering Tavern.
