A Portland company that specializes in information technology strategy and managed technology services has launched a service it says is designed to provide clients with a measurable approach to improving their cybersecurity.

Systems Engineering said its new “adaptive cybersecurity framework,” or aCSF, is based on a proprietary methodology and guidance from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md.

The service was developed to meet the needs of clients and provide them with resilience into the future, said Systems Engineering President and CEO Matt McGrath.

“It reflects our approach to delivering secure technology solutions that enhance, rather than encumber, business productivity,” he said.

Founded in 1988, Systems Engineering is employee-owned and serves clients nationwide from its offices in Portland and Manchester, N.H., with a team of over 180 professionals.

Its new offering comes in response to a proliferation of cyberthreats that affect businesses of all sizes in every sector, McGrath said. The adaptive nature of the services is designed to help businesses attain “cybersecurity maturity” at any point — wherever they are currently — with the company helping to build a plan that demonstrates measurable progress.

The development of the system is based on the principle that security is inextricably linked with productivity.

“This is especially important because businesses have become increasingly vulnerable to attack as they integrate cloud-based systems and processes,” McGrath said.

Threat of cyberattacks

A recent PricewaterhouseCoopers survey of CEOs found that the top concern cited by respondents was cyber-related risk. Seven out of 10 cyberattacks are aimed at small or medium-sized businesses, according to the National Cybersecurity Alliance.

System Engineering's service is a modular approach to measuring security and creating a roadmap to maintain security even as the threat landscape changes.

“We work with our clients to complete an assessment of their people, processes and technologies that impact and inform their organization’s security,” said Erik Thomas, the company’s director of advisory services. “The adaptive cybersecurity framework takes the subjectivity and guesswork out of cybersecurity by providing a customized, measurable roadmap to clients to objectively measure their security posture against the ever-evolving technology and risk landscape.”
