Portland mainstay Joe’s Super Variety to be included in new apartment building

Even though a landmark variety store on Portland’s Congress Street will soon be demolished to make way for a new apartment building, it won’t be going away.

Joe’s Super Variety (665 Congress St.), formerly Joe’s Smoke Shop, will reopen on the first floor of a new eight-story building that will include 139 market-rate apartments, the Portland Press Herald reported. Demolition is expected to begin in a couple of weeks. Redfern Properties of Portland is the developer behind the $17 million project.

The store, opened in 1945 by the current owners’ grandfather, originally sold mostly tobacco products, but it’s been expanded to include more convenience store items.

David Discatio, one of the three brothers who run the shop, told the Press Herald that once the store reopens, its offerings may be tweaked to appeal to the more upscale tenants.
