Saco is looking for a new city administrator, the city announced late Friday.
John Bohenko, who served as city administrator since October 2023, will step down, effective Aug. 27.
"Bohenko has chosen to leave to prioritize his health," the city said in a news release. No other details were provided.
During his time in Saco, Bohenko led the city through property tax stabilization and equalization, the Army Corp of Engineers jetty spur project and other coastal resiliency efforts, construction of the upgraded wastewater treatment plant and several long-climate, housing and transportation plans.
Under his watch, the fiscal year budget for 2025 reduced the property tax rate by 65 cents, which equated to a reduction of the annual property tax by $280 on a home assessed at $400,000.
“I’ve truly enjoyed my time in Saco, working with a great staff, a passionate City Council, and an engaged community with a great future ahead,” Bohenko said. “I have also enjoyed working with Mayor (Jodi) MacPhail on setting the City Council agenda and moving the city forward in a positive way.”
Saco has launched a nationwide search to fill the city administrator position, working with HR Maine Consulting whichled the city’s previous administrator search.
“We’re committed to finding a leader who brings the right blend of experience, innovation, and a deep dedication to serving the people of Saco,” MacPhail said. “We’re grateful to John for positioning the city well for ongoing growth, climate resilience, and community well-being.”
The office of the city administrator is responsible for overseeing all municipal departments, developing and presenting annual budgets to the City Council, and implementing policies to support sustainable community growth and fiscal responsibility.
John is an excellent City Manager and did a great job.
