Sanford developmental service merges with Oxford counterpart to expand reach

Waypoint Maine Inc. in Sanford and the Progress Center Inc. in Oxford completed a merger that’s expected to expand services for children and adults with developmental disabilities and autism.

The merger of the nonprofits, which became effective Oct. 31, marks “a significant step forward" in their shared mission to strengthen community-based care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism and behavioral health challenges across southern and western Maine, according to a news release.

The merger expand Waypoint’s presence in western Maine. 

The Progress Center’s programs and staff will continue under the Waypoint name.

“Together, we’re strengthening our ability to serve more people, in more places, with the quality and compassion they deserve,” said Jennifer Putnam, Waypoint’s CEO.

The Progress Center’s programs include residential services and community supports. Teams from both organizations are working to ensure a smooth transition for individuals, families and staff. 

Established in 1980, the Progress Center’s headquarters is at 5 Fore St. in Oxford, with additional offices in Bridgton and Norway. Waypoint will continue operations at all of the facilities. 

Before the merger, the Progress Center had 65 employees and 350 clients.

Founded in 1966, Waypoint’s main office is at 5 Dunaway Drive in Sanford, with additional facilities in York and Oxford counties. Pre-merger, Waypoint had  270 employees and 800 clients.
