Somerset Co. town pioneers local ag commission

The town of Starks has become the first in the state to form a local commission to protect the interests of farmers in the area.

The Kennebec Journal reported that the commission is based on the model of similar entities in Massachusetts and Connecticut and that a movement to form similar commissions is beginning to take hold in New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

Jay Finegan, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Agriculture, told the paper that he was not aware of other similar local commissions in the state.

Paul Frederic, a selectman, farmer and commission member in Starks, told the paper that the goal of the new group is to bring more farmers to the area, expand gardening and create an agricultural district in town to preserve some of the town's historic farmland.
