State oversight committee votes to overhaul business tax incentives

Maine will join a number of other states in developing a 10-year economic development plan after the Legislature’s Government Oversight Committee voted to submit legislation that will overhaul Maine’s business incentive programs.

GOC co-chairman Sen. Roger Katz of Augusta told Maine Public that over the span of more than a year, the panel investigated how the state uses tax breaks to entice businesses to expand in or relocate to Maine. He told Maine Public that among the panel’s recommendations is better oversight of the incentives that amount to billions of dollars a year.

“I think most people out there think we have a plan," Katz told Maine Public. "We don’t have a plan and many other states do, and it’s about time Maine had one.”
