State picks Anthem to administer insurance plan for state employees

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield was selected by the state to administer a $5.5 million annual contract to oversee the health insurance plan for 28,000 current and former state employees and their dependents.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Anthem was selected in a competitive bid process over the current administrator Aetna and the other bidder, Harvard Pilgrim, for the initial three-year term that will begin July 1.

The newspaper reported that the state employee health insurance program is a self-insured plan and that Anthem’s role is limited to being the plan’s administrator.

The state also selected Express Scripts Inc. as its pharmacy benefit manager and Sun Life as its stop-loss insurer, the newspaper reported.
