Sun Life Financial to open Scarborough office

Canadian insurance company Sun Life Financial is planning to open a satellite office in Scarborough, saying it could eventually hire 200 people there.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Toronto-based insurer plans to hire 100 people immediately, and will expand its workforce to 200 in the next few years. The office, which will focus on disability insurance, will be located at the building formerly occupied by Cole Haan.

Dan Fishbein, president of Sun Life’s U.S. subsidiary, told the newspaper his company chose to locate in the Portland area because the city has a good reputation in the disability insurance business. He added that Scarborough’s proximity to the company’s other New England offices, in Windsor, Conn., and Portsmouth, N.H., also was a factor.
