Twelve years after Swedish manufacturer Mölnlycke Health Care opened a factory at Brunswick Landing, the company said it will invest 115 million euros ($134 million) to expand the facility.
Mölnlycke, staffed by 129 employees in Brunswick, makes wound care products at the site inside an industrial park operated by the Midcoast Regional Development Authority.
Expansion plans include space for new production lines and warehousing areas, a new converting line to assemble finished products and additional space for supporting processes, Chris Biddle, the company's general manager for U.S. wound care manufacturing, noted in an emailed response to questions from Mainebiz.
He also said the location is appealing to employees who live locally or within a reasonable commute, adding that “Brunswick Landing is well-established and boasts a highly skilled and dedicated workforce.”
While the company declined to disclose its hiring plans, it said the investment will create new job opportunities and engage local contractors.
"This expansion strengthens our U.S. presence and our mission to free patients and caregivers from the burden of wounds,” said Zlatko Rihter, the company’s CEO, in Thursday’s announcement. “With increased manufacturing capacity, we're ready to meet the growing needs of our customers and take our U.S. growth to the next level."
Jake Levesque, director of innovation and development for the Midcoast Regional Development Authority, declined to comment,
Mölnlycke is working with Portland-based SMRT Architects & Engineers in Portland on the project.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Mölnlycke, a world-class medtech company with a balanced vision of growing their U.S. business, providing jobs in Maine and doing right by their people," SMRT President Bradley Hodges told Mainebiz.
Mölnlycke is owned by Investor AB, a publicly traded company whose shares are listed on the NASDAQ QMX Stockholm exchange.
Total sales in 2024 were 2.06 billion euros, a 7% increase over 2023. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization amounted to 591 million euros in 2023.
