Tax break for $1.2M Houlton project gets initial OK

A proposed $1.2 million expansion of a nursing and long-time care facility in Houlton received initial approval for a tax break from the town.

The Houlton Pioneer Times reported the creation of a tax increment financing district for Madigan Estates would help expand the 86-bed facility, renovate some parts of the existing building and create approximately 15 full-time jobs. It could take the Houlton Town Council up to six months to create the district, Interim Town Manager Butch Asselin said.

Jim Brown, a spokesman for Madigan Estates, said the facility’s expansion would help it fulfill “a tremendous unmet need [for nursing and long-term care services],” noting that “most local providers are at capacity right now.”

The Town Council unanimously approved moving ahead with the project last week. It has hired Eaton Peabody Consult Group for $15,000 to help with the process of creating a TIF district.
