The week in review

The good: The Maine Community College System this week announced plans to invest $6.2 million to expand educational opportunities in rural Maine, including offering scholarships and increasing distance-learning opportunities. Most of the new programs will launch by fall 2008.

The bad: The Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, a Washington, D.C., advocacy group, this week accused Canada of violating a new trade agreement covering softwood lumber. The coalition says Canada is improperly flooding the U.S. market with highly subsidized lumber and undercutting American producers, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The budgetary: The quest to balance the state budget continues into the holiday season, with Gov. John Baldacci this week ordering state agencies to reduce spending by $38 million during the current fiscal year, according to a press release. The temporary curtailment order is intended to reduce spending until a supplemental budget can be passed to incorporate a projected revenue shortfall.
