Thomas College says it will hold in-person graduation ceremony, socially distanced

File Photo / Jim Neuger Laurie Lachance is president of Thomas College, which said it plans an in-person graduation ceremony for May 15.

Thomas College, the private business college in Waterville, will host an in-person, traditional graduation in May with Meredith Strang Burgess of Burgess Advertising & Marketing as its commencement speaker.

The graduation ceremony will be held May 15 and graduates from 2020 and 2021 are allowed to participate. Last year’s graduation ceremony was held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, the graduates may invite a maximum of two guests to the on-campus ceremony, as well as the honors convocation ceremony being held the night before.

For both ceremonies, each graduate and their guests will be assigned a space to watch the event, safely distanced from other guests. Everyone will be required to follow required safety protocols. Thomas has a total of 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

The in-person graduation announcement comes as other Maine schools grapple with commencement plans. The University of Maine says it plans to have an in-person stage walk that will be recorded as part of a virtual ceremony, but plans are still being finalized. The University of Southern Maine will host a virtual event, while the University of New England, Bowdoin College and Bates College will host in-person graduations.

Strang Burgess will speak at the 127th annual Thomas College commencement, while the honors convocation speaker will be Danielle Marquis, a 1999 graduate from Thomas College and co-owner of Higgins & Bolduc Insurance in Oakland. Strang Burgess could not be immediately reached for comment.

Strang Burgess, president and CEO of the communications company based in Falmouth, is a breast cancer survivor and active advocate for cancer awareness and prevention. She also volunteers for organizations such as Maine Development Foundation, the University of Maine, Hebron Academy and the Maine Historical Society.
