TV reality show a boon for local business

An Ellsworth home-building business has had its hands full since the reality TV series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition arrived Sunday in Milbridge to replace a family's deteriorating farmhouse.

The home owners, Brittany Ray and Ron Smith, with their three children, will spend the week in Disneyland while show host Ty Pennington, Broughman Builders Inc. of Ellsworth, and hundreds of volunteers tear down the family house and rebuild it as a luxury home. More than $600,000 in donated RVs from Motor Home & RV Super Center of Auburn will be used by the cast members, the Bangor Daily News reports.

According to a press release, the Ray-Smith family struggles to make ends meet on their income as teachers in the local school. Their home, a 100-year-old farmhouse on a parcel of what was once a family farm, has a failing septic system, cracking foundation, ailing furnace, leaky roof and ancient electrical wiring.
