UMaine trustees increase tuition

The University of Maine System will increase the average tuition for in-state undergraduate students across the system's seven campuses by 5.8%.

The system's board of trustees voted last night on the increase for full-time undergraduate students who are Maine residents. The average 5.8% tuition increase is the lowest since the 2002-03 academic year, when the increase was 4.7%, according to The Maine Campus. The system last year increased tuition for the 2008-2009 academic year by 10.8%, and then agreed to keep future tuition hikes to a systemwide average of 6%.

Trustees also approved the system's $519.8 million budget for fiscal year 2010, which begins July 1, according to the Bangor Daily News.
