UMFK launches winter sports program

An increased interest in winter sports has prompted the University of Maine at Fort Kent to help prepare interested students for careers in the industry.

The university's Natural and Behavioral Sciences Division will offer a business concentration in winter sports management beginning next fall, the Bangor Daily News reported. The program will help prepare students for leadership positions in the community-based ski industry and will focus on developing business models, coordinating fundraising events and programming, and learning the basics of ski area maintenance.

The program would consist of 24 credit hours in a classroom setting and 12 credit hours interning at any of Maine Winter Sports Center's Alpine and Nordic ski facilities in the state, the paper reported.
