Urgent care chain ConvenientMD plans to add 3 new locations in Maine

A chain of walk-in medical care clinics that walked into Maine four years ago is planning to add its seven, eighth and ninth locations in the state.

ConvenientMD, based in Portsmouth, N.H., intends to build urgent care clinics at the following locations, according to recent notices with the state Department of Health and Human Services:

  • Auburn: in the Auburndale Shopping Center, 600 Center St.
  • Augusta: in the Turnpike Mall, 20 Whitten Road
  • Sanford: 1420 Main St.

Each of the sites will be 5,150 square feet in size, and total capital costs for the new centers are estimated at $2.7 million, ConvenientMD said in its filings.

The company did not immediately respond to requests for more information about the plans.

ConvenientMD is backed by private investors, including the social impact arm of global firm Bain Capital, which in May acquired a share of the company owned by Starr Investment Holdings. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but Bain Capital’s Double Impact business typically invests $25 million to $75 million in portfolio companies.

ConvenientMD was founded nine years ago and entered Maine in 2017 with urgent care clinics in Portland and Westbrook. The company also has locations in Bangor, Brunswick and Saco, and opened an Ellsworth clinic in January.

In total, Convenient MD operates 29 locations and employs over 1,000 people across Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The company’s clinics provide a range of basic medical care, including treatment for common illnesses and injuries, COVID-19 testing, employer health services, physical exams and preventive health services. The clinics also perform X-rays, laboratory testing and minor surgical procedures. Appointments are not necessary, and most insurance plans are accepted, but not required to receive care.

ConvenientMD is one of an expanding field of urgent care providers across Maine and the nation. Even before the pandemic fueled the need for easily accessible medical care, the number of clinics was growing steadily.
