U.S. House passes Acadia bill

The United States House of Representatives yesterday approved a bill aimed at restoring Acadia National Park's advisory committee and boosting the amount of money the park can spend on land acquisition.

Rep. Michael Michaud, who introduced the bill, released a statement confirming the House had approved the legislation, the Bangor Daily News reported. If approved by Congress, the bill would restore the park's citizen Advisory Commission, created in 1986 and dissolved in 2006, for another 20 years, as well as increase the limit the park can spend on acquiring land by $10 million, to $28 million.

The Senate is expected to vote on a similar bill in the next several weeks, according to a statement released Tuesday by Sen. Susan Collins, the co-sponsor of the bill.
