Verso challenges Jay’s tax abatement denial

Verso Corp. isn’t done fighting for a lower assessment of its paper mill in Jay. The company is now appealing the town’s decision to deny its requested tax abatement.

The Sun Journal reported that Verso is seeking to reduce the mill’s assessed value from $593.78 million to about $400 million, arguing that the property is overvalued. The mill’s assessed value had been previously lowered by the town from $815.4 million.

Jay’s Board of Assessment Review is expected to hold a meeting Thursday on whether Verso’s appeal application is complete.
