Westbrook methadone clinic fined $1M

A methadone clinic in Westbrook has agreed to pay $1 million to settle a suit that says it improperly dispensed methadone, the U.S. Attorney's Office said yesterday.

In its civil suit against CAP Quality Care Inc., the federal government said the clinic in 2001 and 2002 contributed to "an unusual spike" in methadone overdose deaths in the Portland area by using an unreliable methadone dispensing system and falsifying documents.

Despite agreeing to pay the settlement, clinic owner Noa Shinderman said he didn't believe the facility contributed to the methadone overdose deaths, according to the Associated Press.
