Work underway for Southport age-qualified housing

Ground has been broken on the island community of Southport for The Captains’ Way, a six-building, age-qualified housing project.

The project, which has been in the works for four years, was recently made possible by a water line extension of the Boothbay Region Water District. It’s located on the north end of the island and fronts on state Route 238 and Decker Cove, and is just a quarter-mile from the bridge that connects Boothbay Harbor to the island community and its population of approximately 606, according to a release from local developer Ed Jewett.

The Captains’ Way was originally conceived as a housing solution for senior residents who wanted to stay on the island after having to move away from older, high-maintenance homes.

The cottage-style, one-floor residences each have two bedrooms and two baths and are arranged in the development in a cluster configuration. They will also all feature a front porch to encourage the development to have the feel of a traditional neighborhood, Almost five acres of nearby land will be maintained as natural woodland for residents.
