With Gov. Janet Mills’ recent approval of regulations on the legalized recreational market for marijuana, over a dozen Maine cities and towns have chosen to permit local businesses that sell or produce pot. The number is expected to grow, as other communities seem ready to “opt in.” And the city of Auburn is encouraging existing medical marijuana businesses to apply now for a recreational-market license.

Still, not every community is joining the trend.

Although Maine voters legalized recreational pot through a 2016 citizen referendum, some municipalities have enacted moratoriums on marijuana merchants. Other towns are adopting a wait-and-see approach. With recreational marijuana sales beginning perhaps early next year, there are, still, divided opinions about where the sellers set up shop.

With a recent study showing that pot use among teenagers actually drops with legal weed (because once it's legal, sellers card), I say sell it in my town. I'd rather have my neighbors able to buy locally than have to travel to buy it. The more people who come for the pot, the more likely they are to stop at the local grocer, restaurant and other businesses.

Recreational marijuana retail would be a great addition to the Westbrook retail mix!

The people have voted/spoken and want it. Maine could certainly use the revenue. Put the controls in place and get to business!

As long as we tax it at high rate and put that towards lowering our taxes, I would be all for it.

Our community just voted (by quite a large margin) not to allow recreational marijuana sales here. Studies show that marijuana is detrimental to developing brains, and not enough research has been done to know how it affects adults. Our state already has a huge problem with drugs. Why encourage more?
