2 cos. seek Portland-to-Nova Scotia ferry service

A Maine and Maryland company have submitted bids to Nova Scotia officials to restart a ferry service between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the provincial officials are expected to take about a month to evaluate the bids, which did not include a bid from the former operator of a high-speed ferry service, The Cat, from 2006 to 2009.

The paper reported that the Baltimore-based Maritime Applied Physics Corp., an engineering and manufacturing firm with a facility in Brunswick, and the Eliot-based Quest Navigation Inc. were the two bidders for the service.

Neither of those companies operate ferry services now.

In September, Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter told a Canadian newspaper, The News, that the province was willing to spend up to $21 million to restart the ferry service because of its importance to tourism to the region.
