Southwest adds nonstop Portland-to-Orlando flight

Southwest Airlines plans to add a nonstop flight from Portland to Orlando.

The Portland Press Herald reported the airline plans to launch the new route March 8.

Portland International Jetport Director Paul Bradbury told the paper Orlando is the airport’s third-most-popular destination after the Washington, D.C. area and the New York City area.

Other airlines in the Northeast have also eyed adding flights to the Orlando area, hoping to capture seasonal traffic from people escaping cold winters. Allegiant Air announced last week it will start service between the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease and the Orlando area in October and Portland-based airline startup Elite Airways, which received commercial certification from the Federal Aviation Administration in late 2012, also plans to target a market for flights between the Northeast and the Orlando area.
