All family-owned businesses in Maine were eligible for consideration during the application process, the IFOB said. It considered family-owned businesses as ones in which an owner either shared ownership or worked in the business with at least one other family member and had a commitment to the continuation of the enterprise.

This year’s application pool included businesses in diverse industries from across the state, according to the release. The pool was narrowed to 40 semifinalists and then to the finalists by a panel of independent judges.

The Institute for Family-Owned Business is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting family-owned businesses, which represent about 80% of all businesses in Maine.
