Two years after acquiring a 21,700-square-foot building at 40 Granite Hill Road in Manchester, Woodfords Family Services has achieved a milestone in the creation of a central Maine community service hub.

Woodfords, which serves people with special needs and their families, will host a ceremonial beam signing on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 3 p.m.

The event will mark the latest step of the renovation project that will allow the nonprofit to expand services and opportunities for the greater Kennebec County region.

Attendees will have the opportunity to sign a commemorative beam that will later be raised and secured into the building’s structure.

100 jobs

Woodfords acquired the property from Kennebec Valley YMCA in 2023, at a time when the Y was working on a consolidation plan and Woodfords was developing a long-term plan to expand services in central Maine.

The building, constructed in 1987, came with just over three acres and around 100 parking spots.

Founded in 1967, Woodfords serves more than 2,000 individuals and families with locations in Brewer, Kennebunk, Manchester, New Gloucester, Waterville and Westbrook.

The organization had already been providing services in central Maine but, looking to expand, the opportunity to purchase the building accelerated the timeline.

The hub is expected to bring more than 100 jobs to the region and expand access to disability-related services for hundreds of children, adults and families, according to a news release. Services will include an array of behavioral health, educational, clinical, residential and training programs.

The hub is scheduled to open next summer.

“We have provided services in the Manchester region for years, and this expansion represents Woodfords’ commitment to the many families who need more support and better access to life-changing programs,” said Mark Eves, Woodfords’ executive director. “The project significantly advances our mission and brings a tremendous economic benefit to the community.”

The project is funded in part of $2 million in congressionally directed spending supported by U.S. Sens. Angus King, I-Maine, and Susan Collins, R-Maine.

Wright-Ryan Construction, of Portland, serves as general contractor.

“Wright-Ryan has partnered with nonprofits and community organizations across the state of Maine for more than four decades to help breathe new life into facilities that advance their missions,” said Marc Bourgeois, Wright-Ryan’s vice president of commercial construction

The event will feature light refreshments and remarks from agency and government officials.
