Acadia gets $800K to boost transportation

Acadia National Park’s bus transit system is getting a boost from a $800,000 federal grant that will be used to continue construction on the park’s welcome center and intermodal facility.

The Federal Transit Administration awarded the grant to the Maine Department of Transportation to continue planning and construction work on the two buildings. Announced Monday by U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, the effort is intended to reduce traffic congestion in the park.

The intermodal facility is expected to improve access to the park’s Island Explorer, a propane-power bus system that seeks to improve traffic conditions and reduce pollution.
