Advocate: Verizon should reduce landline price

On October 11, Maine's Public Advocate submitted a list of 23 conditions it believes Maine must insist on if it approves FairPoint Communications' plans to acquire Verizon's landlines in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Among the recommendations, the Public Advocate says the state should seek assurances DSL service under FairPoint will be as fast and as affordable as DSL under Verizon, oversee the technical skills of staff in the months surrounding the sale and require Verizon to reduce the sale price for the lines to decrease the amount of debt FairPoint would assume, according to a press release.

A Verizon spokesman told the Bangor Daily News, "We strongly disagree with [the public advocate's] analysis." FairPoint officials could not be reached by the paper for comment. The pending sale of 1.6 million lines in northern New England awaits regulatory approval from each of the three involved states.
