EMMC nurses OK contract, strike averted

The nurses union at Eastern Maine Medical Center on Saturday approved a new, three-year contract, ending weeks of contentious negotiations with hospital leadership.

The new contract provides for the establishment of a Professional Performance Committee of staff nurses that will meet with hospital management to address and resolve concerns the nurses have with staffing shortages and patient care, according to a statement posted Saturday on the Maine State Nurse's Association website. Details of the new contract won't be available until the board of Eastern Maine Healthcare approves the contract at its meeting today, according to the statement.

The union had planned a 24-hour strike this Wednesday, but after emergency negotiations last week the strike notice was withdrawn.
