Applications sought for governor's business excellence awards

Maine businesses are invited to submit applications for this year's Governor's Award for Business Excellence in several categories, including four new ones just announced.

Applications for the 2019 contest, announced by Gov. Janet Mills and Commissioner Heather Johnson of the Department of Economic and Community Development on Tuesday, are due by Oct. 7.

Since 1991, the awards have recognized and celebrated Maine businesses with a high level of commitment to their community and employees, as well as exemplary performance in the manufacturing or service profession.

“Maine is home to world-class businesses in every industry that should be recognized for their innovation, adaptation, and commitment to our state,” Mills said in a news release. “I encourage all Maine business owners and entrepreneurs to apply for the Governor’s Award for Business Excellence, and I look forward to honoring your contributions to Maine.”

Past recipients include L.L. Bean Inc., Jackson Laboratory and Sea Bags.

This year, the award seeks to celebrate and highlight elements of the administration’s forthcoming 10-year Strategic Economic Plan, which Johnson will discuss at a Thursday presentation in Portland.

New categories include a Heritage Industry Award, recognizing business excellence in the manufacturing sector, forest industry, or marine economy; an Innovation Award, for business excellence through innovation and entrepreneurship; and a Rural Revitalization Award, recognizing business excellence that has contributed to the revitalization and growth of one of Maine’s rural and/or distressed economic regions.

There is also a new Welcome Home category to recognize business owners from underrepresented groups in Maine's economy including veterans, women and immigrants.

All winners will be honored at a ceremony at the Blaine House in Augusta on Dec. 18.
