Aroostook hospital plans expansion

Officials at The Aroostook Medical Center are planning a $3 million expansion that will include a new outpatient services center.

The Presque Isle hospital's board of trustees recently approved the plan to renovate a 50,000-square-foot former IGA building and turn it into the outpatient center, the Bangor Daily News reported. The center, expected to open by January 2009, will offer expanded hours, and basic laboratory and imaging services. The plan also includes consolidating services now offered at a number of the hospital's Horizons Health Services centers across northern Maine to the A.R. Gould Memorial Hospital, the medical center's main campus in Presque Isle, and the new outpatient center.

Hospital officials believe the expansion and consolidation will enhance the facility's services and save more than $500,000 a year, the Daily News reported.
