Bangor International Airport will receive $14.2 million in federal funding for expansion and renovation that could boost service for travelers.

The funding was authorized through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and provided through the U.S. Department of Transportation, according to a news release Thursday.

The plans for improvements include the construction of a connector between the two terminal buildings. By providing access to gates in both terminals, the connector will increase capacity and flexibility for air carriers, provide opportunities to increase flight service, and promote competition.

Also planned is the replacement of a ground-level boarding gate with a new gate and jet bridge, expansion of the passenger security screening checkpoint and upgrades for utilities such as the heating and ventilation system.

“Bangor International Airport is an economic powerhouse that serves as a key gateway for visitors to Maine and connects the Bangor region to the world,” said U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the ranking member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee. “The upgrades and expansions that this investment will support will enhance passengers’ overall experience and allow the airport to grow its operations.”

Airport Director Tony Caruso added, “This renovation and expansion will allow us to provide even greater customer service to passengers, but also allow us to be a better environmental steward by improving the efficiency of aging utilities."

Bangor International Airport is served by Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. The airport typically sees 575,000 to 600,000 passengers each year. Known by airport code BGR, Bangor International operates a single, 11,440-foot-long runway.
