BEP rejects Downeast LNG withdrawal, again

State environmental officials yesterday suspended Downeast LNG's controversial application for a liquefied natural gas facility in Robbinston after the company attempted for a second time to withdraw and resubmit its application, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Downeast LNG on Oct. 2 notified the Maine Board of Environmental Protection that it was pulling its application for an LNG facility on Passamaquoddy Bay in order to make alterations to the plan because the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had rejected its request to build a pipeline through Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge. Company officials said they planned to file an amended application after securing an alternative pipeline route from the terminal in Robbinston to existing gas facilities in Baileyville.

That was the second time Downeast LNG had told the BEP it wanted to withdraw its application. The BEP's latest rejection came Thursday when the board voted to suspend its review of the application until July 1 at the latest.
