CMMC liable for $8M malpractice payout

An Auburn jury on Thursday awarded a Lewiston woman nearly $8 million in a malpractice case against Central Maine Medical Center.

Sasha Emond was 16 when she gave birth in 2002 to a boy at CMMC in Lewiston. Emond's suit alleged that her midwife, Irene Meyers, did not notify the supervising doctor that the baby was in distress during delivery and that CMMC did not order an emergency Caeserean section, according to the Lewiston Sun Journal. The child was born with cerebral palsy due to a lack of blood and oxygen to his brain.

CMMC and Meyers are liable for the $7.96 million award, which Emond's attorney told the Portland Press Herald will be used for the boy's past and future medical care. The award is the second largest medical malpractice payout in Maine history.
