A Biddeford manufacturer of protective face shields is now rolling out a new type of shield that could reduce costs for health-care providers and front-line businesses in the pandemic.

Thermoformed Plastics New England claims the new product, which incorporates a replaceable plastic shield with a high-strength headband, can lower per-use cost of the face protection from $3 or $4 to as little as 65 cents.

The company, which produces plastic packaging for medical devices and other products, began making face shields last month in response to the COVID-19 crisis. But founder and General Manager Paul Tyson noticed that many such products became unusable because their 3D-printed headbands would break over time, he said in a news release Wednesday.

His solution was to develop a headband made of polypropylene with a silicone strap, dubbed Faceshield Plus.

“We were looking for a longer-term solution that was less expensive and more efficient and we found it in the design and execution using injection molding,” he said.

The headbands are sold with 20 replacement plastic shields, resulting in a product Tyson said is more economic and more environmentally friendly.

Thermoformed Plastics has donated over 16,000 face shields since the pandemic began. The company, founded in 2003, moved to its 28,000-square-foot facility on Hill Street in Biddeford three years ago.
